The AWARE Coaching Model is Based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT)

Motivation is crucial for people from all walks of life, whether parents, teachers, coaches, managers, or individuals. It drives them to get things done and reach their goals. While some people may be motivated by external factors like rewards or recognition, internal factors such as their interests, curiosity, caring for others, or belief system inspire others.

Self-Determination Theory (SDT), proposed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan back in 1980 (Center for self-determination theory, 2014), provides a way to understand what motivates people. It suggests that when people feel they have control over what they are doing, are good at it, and have positive relationships with others, they feel inspired, motivated, and engaged. On the other hand, when these factors are missing, it can negatively impact their well-being (Center for self-determination theory, 2014).

The AWARE Coaching Model builds on the foundation of SDT’s three basic needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness(Center for self-determination theory, 2014). It is a transformative coaching tool that helps people increase their self-awareness, recognizes their blind spots, and enable them to make conscious choices based on their increased awareness. By empowering clients to take accountability for their progress and responsibility for their growth and development, coaches using this model can support clients in taking charge of their personal and professional development.

The AWARE Coaching Model is a cyclical process that involves ‘becoming aware of something’, questioning one’s worthiness, taking action, reflecting on the outcomes, and feeling empowered. This model provides clients with a roadmap to increase their self-awareness, make positive life changes, and reach their full potential.

The AWARE Coaching Model stands for:

Awareness:

  • Awareness can come in many forms. It may be a sudden realization or a gradual recognition of something previously overlooked or ignored. External events or feedback from others influence awareness or may come from within through introspection and self-reflection.
  • Regardless of the source, the key is that this awareness leads to a shift in perspective and a recognition that change is needed.
  • The client becomes aware of something they were previously unaware of, which may lead to a ‘light bulb moment’ or an ‘Aha!’ moment. They may be surprised and startled by the discovery, and in that moment of startling, they often decide to behave differently in the future.

Worthiness:

  • Once the individual is aware of something, they may question their self-worth and value concerning that awareness. This questioning may lead to a desire to improve and take action toward becoming a better version of themselves. They may reflect on their current behaviors and consider how they align with their values and sense of worthiness.
  • The process of questioning and reflection can be uncomfortable for anyone, but it can also be a powerful motivator for personal growth and positive change. As clients strive to align their behaviors with their values and sense of worthiness, they may experience greater purpose and fulfillment in their lives.

Action:

  • Taking action can be challenging, as it often requires stepping out of one’s comfort zone and facing potential obstacles or setbacks. However, it is also crucial in achieving personal growth and progress toward one’s goals.
  • The action element can also involve creating a plan or strategy for implementing changes, breaking down significant goals into minor, more manageable actions, and tracking progress. It requires discipline, commitment, and perseverance to stick to the plan and continue moving forward, even in the face of difficulties or setbacks.

Reflection:

  • The individual takes time to reflect on the outcomes of their actions and their progress towards their goal. Reflection can involve considering the positive and negative consequences and identifying areas for further improvement. Reflecting can also help the individual recognize and appreciate their growth and development.
  • Reflection is a vital part of the process of everyone’s personal growth and development. By reflecting on progress, clients can gain valuable insights into their strengths and areas of improvement.

Empowerment:

  • After taking action towards change and experiencing positive outcomes, the individual may feel empowered to continue making progress and take charge of their growth and development. They may feel more confident and capable of achieving their goals and may also be inspired to help others in their journeys of growth and empowerment.
  • Empowerment refers to feeling in control of one’s growth and development. It results from taking action and experiencing positive outcomes, increasing confidence, motivation, and a sense of agency. When clients take steps toward achieving their goals and experience success, they often feel a sense of empowerment. This feeling can inspire them to continue taking action, pushing themselves further, and achieving even more significant results.

Awareness is crucial for people to find purpose in their lives. By becoming more self-aware of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, clients can discover their passions, strengths, and values and ultimately lead a more fulfilling life.

Overall, the AWARE Coaching Model is a powerful tool that can help people develop their self-awareness and improve their self-mastery. It encourages clients to take accountability for their actions and to take responsibility for their development. The model emphasizes that awareness is critical in achieving success and reaching one’s full potential, providing a roadmap for clients who may need help or guidance on moving forward. By becoming aware of their unconscious patterns, habits, behaviors, and biases, clients can make conscious choices and take control of their lives.
