The more resources you have, the more you are expected to contribute to the betterment of society. Now, some don’t find merit in this, but there are people who do. Many High-Net-Worth-Individuals (HNWIs) actively participate in philanthropic endeavors to do their part. And many of these individuals have even founded charities.
But do you know about the most famous charities among the HNWIs? Well, I’m pretty sure you know about a certain few, but let’s take a look at some of them again. Today, our agenda is to know a little bit about some of the wealthiest philanthropic foundations in the world.
Here is the list (in no particular order):
Novo Nordisk Foundation, Denmark
The brainchild of the Nobel Laureate, August Krogh, the purpose of Novo Nordisk Foundation originally was to encourage research leading to world-class solutions for diabetes.
Today, the organization is involved in funding scientific and social causes and monetarily supporting companies working in these areas. Over time, it has worked with many research centers. Moreover, it owns the country’s largest namesake pharmaceutical company.
Wellcome Trust, United Kingdom
In 1936, Henry Wellcome, an entrepreneur in the pharmaceutical industry, founded the Wellcome Trust. The foundation is funded by its publicly listed securities, property, and other investments.
The organization’s purpose is to support scientific research in the healthcare sector. Presently, it is focussing on infectious diseases, climate change, and mental health. Toward the same, it continues to engage in collaborative projects with who’s who in the field.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, United States
Most people are aware of this organization. The umbrella reach of this organization is incredible and laudatory. And this is all thanks to the efforts of Bill and Melinda Gates. The entity comprises two aspects: Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Bill and Melinda Gates Trust.
The organization funds social work in diverse areas, especially toward the upliftment of the underprivileged. Massive funding to third-world countries and their projects had been initiated by the foundation. As a result, the foundation maintains a strong network in several countries.
Howard Hughes Medical Institute, United States
In the 1940s, the organization came into being. It acts as a non-profit research organization and works toward scientific research in the healthcare industry. The organization does not source government funds, but the same is not disallowed for the investigators.
The institute and foundation’s contribution to the healthcare industry has been phenomenal. It was and still is tirelessly involved in biomedical programs spread out across 17 developing countries. The support extended by the organization has been inclusive and diverse.
Azim Premji Foundation, India
Wipro is one of the leading home-grown IT companies in India. And its founder, Azim Premji, is the backbone of the namesake charity organization. He is known to have transferred more than 70 percent of his shareholding in Wipro to the organization.
The organization has worked in multiple areas, which have been classified into three phases. The areas of focus have been primarily public education. To achieve this goal, it partnered and continues to partner with a slew of state governments.
