Chanel’s new 31 Le Rouge lipstick collection is inspired by the birthplace of the brand

Paying homage to one of the chicest addresses in all of Paris, Chanel Beauty has unveiled a stunning line of lipsticks named after 31 Rue Cambon — the birthplace of Chanel.

This exquisite collection boasts a 12-shade range taking colour cues from the brand’s heritage. Each bullet is infused with a smoothing oil drawn from the gardenia flower — which also lends itself to the scent of each lipstick — cultivated by the French fashion house itself. “At the Makeup Creation Studio, we not only drew on the Chanel heritage, but we also absorbed the atmosphere of the couture ateliers that provided a lot of inspiration — the colours of this lipstick are our interpretation of Creation at 31 Rue Cambon,” shares Nathalie Lasnet, director of the Chanel Makeup Creation Studio. “This new lipstick is the quintessence of our colour expertise.”

Shades like “Rouge 2.55” reflect the lining of an iconic Chanel purse, while colours like “Rouge Fétiche” are an ode to Madame Chanel herself, who wore crimson flannel ribbons of the same hue around her ankles. With a shade for every occasion, you can sift through this collection to find your ideal fit, as you would inside a Chanel closet.

“In the makeup Creation Studio, we also kept the Chanel spirit of creation in mind, thinking about the atmosphere in the ateliers, the extraordinary people that work there, their expertise, and their desire for excellence — it really is the pulse of the house,” says Lasnet. “The most striking point, is that Cambon is above all an exceptional place of life, creation, excellence and constant excitement, that looks resolutely to the future, and this is reflected in 31 Le Rouge.”

This launch also marks the first Chanel lipsticks to be housed in glass packaging, which were four years in the making under the creative guidance of a master Japanese glassmaker. On the outside, its faceted casing draws inspiration from the mirrors that line the staircase within the 31 Rue Cambon shop. Inside, glass meets metal to make for a refillable and interchangeable product.

“Gabrielle Chanel used to say, ‘Add more lipstick and attack.’ For us, lipstick is a statement — it embodies a woman’s choice to be whatever she wants to be,” says Lasnet. Armed with a 31 Le Rouge Lipstick in your handbag, you’ll truly feel like you can.
