On August 22, 2024, AWS, a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc., announced the launch of its AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region. The company plans to invest approximately US$6.2 billion in Malaysia through 2038. This investment is aimed at providing developers, startups, entrepreneurs, enterprises, and various organizations—including government, education, and non-profits—more options for running applications and serving end users through AWS data centers located within Malaysia.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim Anwar expressed his enthusiasm for this development on his X social media account, welcoming AWS to Malaysia and highlighting the potential for innovation and technology transfer that the investment could bring.
As the nation’s finance minister, Anwar noted that AWS’s investment is among the largest by global technology companies in Malaysia, joining a series of recent investments from other global leaders like NVIDIA, Google, Microsoft, and Infineon since December 2023.
Anwar also mentioned that AWS has signed a Cloud Framework Agreement with the Malaysian government to enhance cloud adoption within the public sector. As part of AWS’s investment, the company will establish physical data centers in Malaysia, making the country one of Amazon’s 34 launched regions across its global infrastructure network.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this investment will directly create over 3,500 jobs in Malaysia, spanning various sectors such as construction, facility maintenance, engineering, and telecommunications. These jobs will be integral to the high-value AWS supply chain, further boosting Malaysia’s economy.
