France’s Richest, Bernard Arnault, Expands Media Empire with Acquisition of Paris Match

CEO

Bernard Arnault, CEO of luxury giant LVMH and France’s wealthiest individual, has expanded his media holdings with the acquisition of Paris Match, bringing the iconic magazine under his growing empire. The deal, announced on Tuesday, also includes other notable publications, such as Le Journal du Dimanche, which had been overseen by media tycoon Vincent Bolloré.

Bolloré’s controversial influence had stirred significant debate within France’s media circles. Now, the editorial team at Paris Match will be integrated into Arnault’s larger media portfolio, which already includes respected outlets like Les Echos and Le Parisien.

In a joint statement with the previous owners, LVMH described the acquisition as marking “the beginning of a new chapter” for Paris Match, which was first established in 1949.

Arnault, often regarded as a discreet yet influential media figure, is seen by some as a more stabilizing presence compared to Bolloré. However, Arnault has banned LVMH executives from engaging with seven blacklisted media outlets, raising concerns about media independence.

This acquisition also underscores the ongoing trend of media consolidation in France, with critics warning that such concentration of ownership places significant power in the hands of the nation’s elite. The first edition of Paris Match under LVMH ownership is scheduled for release on October 10.
