The Alabama songwriter recently released Midnight Gasoline, his first album in more than a decade

Country singer Jamey Johnson was arrested in Tennessee’s Williamson County over the weekend, according to Nashville TV-news outlet Newschannel 5.

“We can confirm that Jamey Johnson was arrested on Sunday, Nov. 17 in Williamson County. The incident is still under investigation,” the Tennessee Highway Patrol wrote in a statement to the station.

Newschannel 5 reported that the Mobile Patrol app stated that the singer was charged with possession of drugs and speeding. However, while the District Attorney’s Office for Williamson County confirmed the songwriter’s arrest, it wouldn’t confirm the charges. A rep for Johnson didn’t immediately return RS‘s request for comment.

Johnson released his label debut The Dollar in 2006, and rolled out That Lonesome Song two years later. He followed the album with 2010’s double LP The Guitar Song and a 2012 collection of Hank Cochran compositions. The Alabama native returned to the spotlight in November with Midnight Gasoline, his first album of original material in more than a decade. Ahead of the album’s release, he dropped the songs “21 Guns” and “Sober,” the latter of which details the struggle to adhere to sobriety in an industry steeped in drinking culture.

Despite Johnson’s previous recording hiatus, the artist has been a regular touring act and peppers his concerts with choice covers: Tracks by Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard, Bob Seger, and the Band have all appeared in Johnson’s sets. In 2022, 17 years after his Grand Ole Opry debut, Johnson was asked to join the Nashville institution, where he had been a frequent guest.
