A Coaching Model By Flo Cheever, Personal Relationships and Life Mastery Coach, UNITED STATES
RISE Resilience, Inspiration, and the Ability to Sustain, and Enhance.
The coaching process is an extremely powerful experience. This coaching model, R.I.S.E., is based upon the concept of transformation and achievement of the client’s goals. In this model, we reach this change through RESILIENCE, INSPIRATION, and the ability to SUSTAIN, and ENHANCE. I envision this transformation and growth as the ability to RISE.
As coaches, we embrace the client as a whole being, capable of evaluating their circumstances, envisioning their goals, and achieving the transitions necessary to live their best life. Everyone goes through challenges, some more difficult than others. The RESILIENCE to overcome the setbacks or obstacles in life is not based on a select few lucky individuals. According to RESILIENCE studies, “RESILIENCE is not a genetic trait that only a few “super kids” possess…Rather, it is our inborn capacity for self-righting (Werner and Smith, 1992) and for transformation and change (Lifton, 1993).” 1
RISE The Concept of Transformation and Achievement of the Client’s Goals
A coaching session invites the client to partner with the coach to gain the support they need to explore their objective and set their desired method, experience, goal, and outcome. Utilizing the “wholeness” of the client and the innate RESILIENCE of the human organism, partners with the support of the coach to help the client find new perspectives, solutions, and strengths. RESILIENCE enables the client’s growth and ability to RISE to new levels and higher achievements. The benefits of the coaching process can also compound the client’s RESILIENCE by virtue of creating new awareness and meaning in their experiences. Discussing cancer survivors, psychologist, Lari Wenzel of the University of California, Irvine, said “strength and meaning unfold for survivors as they retell their stories, again and again.” The coaching session can be that fertile ground where RESILIENCE and significance RISES to new levels.
The fluid discussion in the coaching session is attached to the desired outcome. Exploring that endpoint can be enhanced by understanding the INSPIRATION the client feels toward the change or ultimate goal. INSPIRATION is intrinsic, it is part of the “Who” of the person and belief system. Long-term, deeply rooted actions stem from INSPIRATION. According to many psychologists, INSPIRATION has internal loci of origin. It is not necessary to wait for something to drive us but INSPIRATION occurs from processes within the individual that seek the best version of ourselves. This reasoning supports the wholeness of the coaching client that we hold as a core value in Coaching. According to psychologists, Todd M. Thrash and Andrew J. Elliot, INSPIRATION “involves a moment of clarity and awareness of possibilities. The heights of human motivation spring from the beauty and goodness that precede us and awaken us to better possibilities.” 2 Thrash and Elliot expand the nature of INSPIRATION as striving to move new ideas or visions into reality.
This is a reflection of the coaching process. As the Coach and Client explore the topic with meaningful questions, the client can connect with the deep roots of INSPIRATION from within. Asking enlightened questions can help the Client to become aware of INSPIRATION that is part of their inner cognition and recognize when it comes to the surface, e.g., “What inspires you? When were you inspired? How did that feel?” INSPIRATION is transcendent and goes beyond making movement to achieve goals. “INSPIRATION is more related to an awakening to something new, better, or more important: transcendence of one’s previous concerns.”3 This describes powerful reserves in the individual, the Client. Building the coaching experience to include awareness of a larger vision can shift the client’s perspective and worldview. Sometimes the “shift” in perspective happens or expands outside of the coaching session. This generalizes the “learning” the client gained in the session to the outside world and can make the coaching experience even more impactful.
Coaches can reinforce their client’s transformation – by encouraging the client’s understanding and implementation of their own accountability. This is the enlightenment and the “gift that keeps giving” of the coaching session’s effect, the ultimate goal in transformation—to SUSTAIN change. Building awareness of focus, purpose, and commitment, re-evaluating and raising standards, and seeking development strengthen the ability to SUSTAIN growth, and increases efficiency and mastery. Real progress is achieved when we hold our ground and remain on the continuum of sustained change. As coaches, we can help our clients design action plans that build support and become aware of the structures, actions, and people with whom they engage. Our role as coaches is more effective as we help the client to discover what reinforces the client’s position of strength. What builds them? How do they find encouragement and validation? What strategy works for them? What holds them back? How can that be modified? What fuels their resolve to achieve? Being able to SUSTAIN achievement builds on transformation and evolution and self-mastery.
This coaching Model, R.I.S.E., envisions the elevation and enhancement of the client’s life experience. R.I.S.E. is realistic and compassionate as the client becomes aware, sets plans for new growth, and achieves transformation through a program to ENHANCE the client’s perspective, behavior, and position in life. Enhancement does not demand perfection; it urges growth and mastery without negative judgment and burdens of an all-or-nothing mindset. The coaching process is extremely valuable in self-discovery and ENHANCING the client’s life. Ask powerful questions that draw out, “What do you really want? What is your dream? What do you truly want out of life?” These questions can help the client to excavate their ENHANCED life.
Author, Ayodeji Awosika, writes, “Living a purposeful life is the difference between being alive and actually living. Find something that drives you no matter how long it takes you to find it.” Face your limitations. Face your fears. Don’t live in regret and remain “stuck.”The only thing you have complete control of is yourself, which is why it should be at the center of your focused effort. Become so impressive that you’re impossible to ignore. “4 These ideas inspire my coaching spirit and reflect an ENHANCED life.
Finding the way to design our ideal, fulfilling life-our best life, can be accomplished in increments of positive action that we invest in our vision. The R.I.S.E. coaching model uses this positive investment intentionally to help the client to ENHANCE their condition, find fulfillment and success, and achieve self-mastery.
