These stars have their autumn outfit formula down pat: head-to-toe leather in all-black or a latte-inspired palette, plus occasional pops of cherry red.

We know what you’re thinking: Leather for fall? Groundbreaking. Well, although it’s no secret that leather is a classic wardrobe staple for the cooler months, the versatile material is having a major A-lister moment right now. From sleek trench coats and leggings to miniskirts and blazers, we’ve been spotting tons of stylish celebs in leather this fall — and we can’t get enough.

While a classic black leather moment is always in style, the material’s sleek quality looks beautiful when iterated in the rich colour palette of fall. And fashion girlies like Hailey Bieber, Emily Ratajkowski and Kendall Jenner get it, opting for pieces in espresso (hello, latte dressing!), warm caramel, and deep red.

Looking chic in their head-to-toe leather looks lately, these stylish celebs are showcasing the sartorial versatility of the fabric, which is another reason why leather (real or faux) is so perfect for this transitional season.

Of course, the top fashion houses know best, which is why brands like Bottega Veneta, Coperni and Gabriela Hearst all relied heavily on leather to create show-stopping pieces in their Fall 2023 collections.

But it’s not just legacy fashion houses leading the way with leather. Take Kylie Jenner’s new clothing line Khy, for example. The brand’s freshly released debut collection, which was created in collaboration with Berlin-based brand, Namilia, features 12 items made predominately of faux black leather. With Khy’s goal to provide their customers with accessible wardrobe staples, Jenner’s decision to centre her line’s first drop around faux leather was no accident.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, leather is also ideal for the cooler months because it offers so much protection against the elements (why do you think it’s the go-to fabric of motorcycle enthusiasts?). Whether you’re opting for genuine or faux, most leather pieces are often lined with cotton, wool or sherpa that helps to retain heat while protecting you from the harsh subzero temperatures of the season.

Leather is also generally water-resistant too, so you won’t be soaked after getting caught in an unexpected snowfall. And, let’s be real, we Canadians will take all the help we can get in the winter weather department.

Take a look at some of the most stylish celebrity leather looks for some fall outfit inspo.

Rihanna

In a rare public outing last week, Rihanna wore a leather-on-leather look that’s pure fall outfit inspo. The singer donned an oversized black leather “shacket” (like this faux leather one from Dynamite) with loose-fitting, wine-coloured ombré pants. Keeping it simple with black leather pumps and no accessories, RiRi proved that even the most casual leather looks can look cool — and we’re not just saying that because she’s Rihanna.

Although a leather miniskirt may not be entirely practical for the usual Canadian weather around this time of year, we can’t help but feel inspired by Bieber’s look. To attend Kim Kardashian’s birthday party last month, Bieber wore a toffee leather mini with a matching blazer. She kept the rest of her ensemble simple with a white top, cherry red slingback heels and a matching shoulder bag.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner consistently serves up chic street style looks, but this trench coat ensemble may be one of her most interesting outfits yet. The unique structure of the model’s short cocoa trench gives Jenner with a dramatic cinched waist silhouette. The tailored top half of the outfit was paired with a matching leather skirt and black leather loafers for a casual yet sophisticated finish.

What’s better than a classic leather trench coat for fall? A vintage-esque leather and fur-trimmed trench for a distinct Penny Lane vibe, of course. With her long black fur-trimmed coat and simple black sunglasses, the model is giving Matrix. To round out the Neo-inspired outfit, Emrata accessorized with a pair of knee-high boots, like this pair from Reformation.

Jacob Elordi

The leather look isn’t just for the girls. While book shopping in the Sydney airport last month, the actor was spotted in an edgy aviator-inspired jacket that seamlessly elevated his otherwise simple look, which consisted of belted green cargos and a white tee. Of course, Elordi, who has been known to sport a designer bag or two (or five), is no stranger to the material as his closet is undoubtedly full of leather totes and crossbody carryalls — and, yes, we’re obsessed with his bag collection too.

Dua Lipa

To support Barbie director Greta Gerwig at the AFI Film Festival last week, Dua Lipa wore a sophisticated head-to-toe black leather look. The fitted long-sleeve dress subtly hugged her torso before cascading into a maxi skirt. But the outfit was all but overshadowed by her new bright red hair, which was striking against the black leather dress.

Taylor Swift

While stepping out in NYC recently, Swift embraced the latte dressing trend in a leather outfit that just screams fall. This brown-on-brown ensemble featured a caramel brown leather blazer (which looks just like this one from Ssense) and shiny cherry red heeled booties that provide the outfit with a subtle pop of colour.
