Unreal Engine’s Year in Review: Tim Sweeney Reflects on 2024 and Fab’s Future

CEO

Earlier this month, the Unreal Engine team hosted its annual Year in Review presentation, providing updates on Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN while reflecting on the milestones and challenges faced throughout 2024.

During the accompanying podcast, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney addressed one of the most debated topics in the game development industry this year: the launch of Fab, Epic’s new online marketplace. Sweeney acknowledged the platform’s rocky debut, apologized for its initial shortcomings, and committed to addressing user feedback by implementing requested features and resolving existing issues. He emphasized that Fab’s launch represented only a foundational version of what the team envisioned for the platform.

Sweeney also commented on the merger of the Unreal Engine Marketplace and Sketchfab Marketplace into Fab. He noted that while the transition involved significant changes, it had minimal impact on asset merchants, with most sellers maintaining similar performance levels to those they experienced on the Unreal Engine Marketplace. He acknowledged that some core features, like search functionality, were lost during the transition but assured listeners that the business remained strong for sellers.

Highlighting Fab’s unique capabilities, Sweeney discussed the platform’s cross-engine asset ownership feature. He described how this functionality, which allows assets to be used seamlessly across Unreal Engine, Unity, and DCC tools, had attracted a new wave of Unity developers to the marketplace. Sweeney expressed gratitude to creators who supported the transition and remained patient throughout the process, reaffirming Epic’s commitment to making Fab a more universal and versatile marketplace for game developers.
