Sammy Hagar also makes surprise appearance to perform Van Halen’s “Why Can’t This Be Love?” with Brandon Flowers and crew

Eddie Vedder’s Ohana Festival is underway this weekend in Dana Point, California, with the Pearl Jam frontman popping up during the Killers’ Friday night headlining set to perform Tom Petty’s “The Waiting.”

Vedder dedicated the performance to some diehard Killers fans who situated themselves along the front rail when the festival open hours earlier. “This one’s for you,” Vedder said, pointing them out.

Petty has long been a staple of both Pearl Jam’s and the Killers’ setlists following the Heartbreakers bandleader’s death in 2017: The former has taken to playing “I Won’t Back Down” during their encores, while the latter has leaned heavily on “American Girl.”

Vedder wasn’t the only guest singer the Killers welcomed onstage Friday: Sammy Hagar also stopped by to perform his Van Halen hit “Why Can’t This Be Love?”

Brandon Flowers and company’s Ohana set opened with “Mr. Brightside” which, as the band acknowledged on social media Friday, celebrated its 20th anniversary on September 29; the single was first released on that date in 2003, nearly nine months before the band’s debut LP Hot Fuss arrived.

Ohana Festival continues Saturday with headlining sets from the Chicks and Vedder himself, while Foo Fighters and the Pretenders are tapped to close out the fest on Sunday.
