Destiny Rogers Reimagines Selena Quintanilla’s ‘I Could Fall in Love’ as a Queer Gem

Destiny Rogers is celebrating her identity as a queer Latina by reimagining a Selena Quintanilla classic.

On Wednesday, to celebrate National Coming Out Day, a year after revealing her bisexual identity in an interview with Rolling Stone, Rogers released a snippet of a queer-coded version of Quintanilla’s “I Could Fall in Love.”

Rogers shared a clip of herself singing along to the song, in which she tweaks Quintanilla’s chorus from “I could fall in love with you” to “I could fall in love with her.”

“I could lose my heart tonight/If you turn, and walk away,” she sings. “‘Cause the way I feel, I gotta let you know/And I hope you take me into your arms/Then there’d be no letting go.”

In her post, Rogers — who recently released her single “Save My Love,” her first track touching on her queer identity — described Quintanilla as “the greatest” in an Instagram post.

“What I admire most about her was that she was a risk-taker and was always ready to push boundaries within herself and the music industry,” Rogers wrote. “She inspires me everyday to be the greatest artist I can be and to always stay true to myself. I’m so proud to have been raised Latina with her to look up to.”

Rogers came out as bisexual publicly in an interview with Rolling Stone for National Coming Out Day last year. She opened up about struggling to accept her sexuality after being raised in an intensely religious household.

“I was raised to think it was wrong. I was brainwashed,” she said at the time. “But now, I know that’s not the case, because, bro, I’m happy that this is me. I am.”

At the time, she also teased a poignant ballad titled “Still Your Girl,” in which she grapples with the repercussions of coming out. She sings to her parents about running away from her true feelings, and apologizes to her ex-girlfriend for having to hide their relationship: “Sorry if I didn’t give my all to you. I was working hard to hide the truth.”

The Selena rendition is the newest taste of music on the way from Rogers after releasing “Save My Love.” She dropped “Fall Back” and the Lil Rob-sampling track, “Summer Nights,” last year.
