The BUILD Coaching Model Comprehensive Framework

The BUILD coaching model emerged from my experience coaching young Vietnamese adults as they navigated the complex landscape of professional integration. Comprised of five key components, the BUILD coaching model provides a comprehensive framework for empowering young adults in their pursuit of professional success.

B – Break Down the Goal
U – Unpack the Potential
I – Insight
L – Learn
D – Develop

Let’s explore each element of this coaching model.

BUILD

B – Break Down the Goal

The first step in the BUILD coaching model is to break down the goal. This initial phase is crucial for clarifying the client’s objectives and identifying the skills and qualities needed to achieve them. By breaking down the goal into manageable components, the client gains a clearer understanding of the path ahead.

To begin this process, the coach and client work together to define the client’s goals in the context of their profession or desired job. This may involve setting specific career targets, such as securing a promotion, changing careers, or launching a new business venture. Once the goals are articulated, the coach accompanies the client to identify the skills and qualities required to excel in their chosen field.

By breaking down the goal in this manner, clients can gain clarity about their objectives and the specific attributes they need to develop or leverage to succeed. It also sets the stage for the subsequent stages of the BUILD model by providing a foundation upon which the client’s potential can be explored and harnessed.

U – Unpack the Potential

The second phase of the BUILD coaching model focuses on unpacking the client’s potential. This step involves a deep exploration of the client’s strengths, core values, experiences, and hidden talents, which can serve as valuable resources for achieving their goals.

Discover the client’s strengths/core values

In this stage, the coach works with the client to identify and understand their core values, beliefs, and personal strengths. Core values are the guiding principles that define an individual’s character and influence their decisions. By aligning their goals with their core values, clients can find greater motivation and fulfillment in their pursuit of success.

This discovery could be done simply by pointing out the pattern in the story that the client told, or the coach could ask specific questions to help the client explore.

Examples of questions that coaches could use:

  • What activities or tasks do you find effortless or enjoyable? What makes it enjoyable for you?
  • What are some accomplishments in your career or personal life that you feel proud of? How did you achieve them?
  • How do your main qualities show up in your work life? How about in your personal life?

Explore their experiences:

The coach can also encourage the client to reflect on their experiences and previous roles, both personally and professionally. This reflection helps uncover hidden skills, qualities, talents, and positive feelings associated with past experiences.

Clients may have developed valuable skills and learned important lessons from various life events, even if those experiences were not directly related to their current goals. By acknowledging these experiences and extracting the lessons learned, clients can broaden their understanding of their potential and how it can be applied to their desired profession.

I – Insight

The third phase involves gaining insight into the client’s existing strengths and resources. This stage encourages clients to acknowledge their strengths and align their experiences and learnings with their core values and strengths.

Acknowledgment of existing strengths/resources

After identifying the existing strengths and resources, the coach guides the client in recognizing and appreciating them. Clients often underestimate their abilities, but acknowledging their strengths can boost their confidence and self-esteem. By drawing attention to these strengths, clients can see how they can be leveraged to achieve their goals.

Alignment of experiences/learning with core values/strengths

Clients are encouraged to align their past experiences and learning with their core values and strengths. This process helps clients recognize that their journey has equipped them with the tools and knowledge necessary to succeed in their chosen profession. It also allows them to see how their past experiences have shaped their strengths and abilities, making them better equipped for their future endeavors.

Exploration of new perspectives about self/acknowledgment of the potential

As clients gain insight into their existing strengths and how these strengths align with their core values, they often experience a shift in their perspective about themselves and their potential. This newfound self-awareness empowers clients to view themselves in a more positive light and believe in their capacity to achieve their goals.

L – Learn

The fourth phase focuses on learning how to apply existing strengths to evolve in the profession and gain new skills. This phase is essential for clients to bridge the gap between their current abilities and the requirements of their chosen profession.

Examples of powerful questions :

  • How to apply existing strengths to evolve in the profession?
  • How can existing strengths help gain new skills?
  • What core values/strengths can the client be reminded of in case of doubt?

Clients are encouraged to explore how their existing strengths can be applied to their chosen profession. Coaches work with clients to develop strategies and action plans that leverage those strengths to excel in their profession. This may involve setting specific goals, identifying opportunities for skill development, and creating a roadmap for achieving professional growth.

In addition to applying existing strengths, clients can use their strengths as a foundation for acquiring new skills. The coach assists clients in identifying areas where their existing strengths can facilitate the acquisition of new skills, enabling them to become more versatile and adaptable professionals.

During this phase, the coach also helps clients identify the core values and strengths that can serve as a source of motivation and guidance during challenging times. When doubts or obstacles arise, clients can draw upon these values and strengths as a source of resilience and determination.

D – Develop

The final phase consists of using new insights and learning about one’s potential for personal and professional development beyond the immediate goals.

How can you use the new learning about your potential in other areas of life?

Clients are encouraged to explore how the knowledge gained through the coaching process can be applied to other aspects of their lives. The skills and insights acquired are not limited to their profession but can be leveraged for personal development and fulfillment as well.

The BUILD coaching model recognizes that personal and professional development are interconnected. Clients can use their newfound awareness of their strengths, core values, and potential to enhance various facets of their lives, such as relationships, health, and personal growth.

Through this model, clients not only acquire the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen profession but also gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their potential. They learn to leverage their strengths, align their experiences with their core values, and apply their newfound insights to various areas of life.
