To think this is only the beginning of the end.
With only 8 episodes left in Power Book III: Raising Kanan, the final chapter begins with a death that will reverberate throughout the series.
While the Power series has seen numerous deaths, there’s something about this one that felt like it really shifted things for so many characters and how we’ll see them this season, which is as exciting as it is terrifying.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 5 Episode 1 saw Lou-Lou’s story come to a tragic end, and his death wasn’t the real shocker; it was how it happened.
When we last saw Kanan at the end of Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4, he was completely done with his mother, and the cliffhanger left us all wondering whether he would kill his own mother as the screen faded to black.
We found out soon enough that Kanan would end up fatally shooting his Uncle Lou when the man stepped in to stop Raq’s bodyguard from shooting him.
While it wasn’t a pre-planned attack, the impact was devastating nonetheless, with the Thomas family forever changed by this tragedy.

And none of them, save for Raq, even know Kanan is the killer!
It’s a wildly ambitious way to begin a season, and while the death haunted the hour, many other storylines were set in motion, including the introduction of the ever-famous Power Universe character, Breeze.
Heading into the new season, we chatted with stars Patina Miller, MeKai Curtis, Shameik Moore, and showrunner Sascha Penn about a variety of topics, as we prepare for another summer in South Jamaica, Queens.
Lou-Lou’s Death Impacts the Whole Family

Adult Kanan made many questionable and deadly choices, and we’re seeing that pattern start long before we met him in the original Power.
Lou-Lou’s death at Kanan’s hand will have far-reaching effects on the Thomas family, and Curtis told us, “I think Lou-Lou’s death impacts the entire family one and the same. I think you see everybody deal with it differently.
“Specifically, Kanan, this is another full circle moment of Kanan understanding what he’s done, the full ramifications and consequences of what comes with that.”
While it’s understandable that everyone handles it differently, it will be especially difficult for Raq, as she knows the truth about what happened and is keeping it hidden to protect her son.

Keeping that secret, especially from Marvin, is something she has to do, while also acknowledging that dwelling on it too long could cause everything else to crumble.
As Miller explained, “I think Raq is dealing with it in her own way, but as you know about Raquel, she can’t really fit in emotion for too long because it comes at a cost.”

Here’s Breeze!
In the aftermath of Lou-Lou’s death, Kanan met up with Breeze again.
The two made plans to start a new kind of drug empire together.
Breeze has long been a mythical figure in the Power streets.
Getting a chance to know him better and see the influence he had on Kanan is a treat for longtime fans of the franchise.

We asked where Breeze is in his life when audiences meet him this season.
Moore told us, “He’s expanding the empire. He’s in expansion mode. He has a successful company, and now he’s acquiring all the competitors to expand it.”
His expansion efforts start with courting both Kanan and Unique, and there’s surely nothing that can go wrong there, right?
Check out our conversation with Moore about joining the universe and what he’s most excited for fans to see this season below.
Don’t Expect Everyone to Ride Off Into the Sunset
Since we already know what happens to Kanan, the prequel series has always been about us learning who Kanan was before he became the thorn in Ghost and Tommy’s side.
But even more than learning about Kanan, we’ve been introduced to his childhood world.
And viewers have become deeply invested in where Kanan’s family and associates will end up when the dust settles.

Penn was quick to let us know, “It’s a dark season. There’s a lot that happens.
“I don’t think anyone coming into Raising Kanan thinks that this show’s going to end on some tremendously hopeful moment where everyone rides into the sunset together. That’s not what happens.”
If there’s one thing the Power Universe has never promised, it’s a happy ending.
