Elon Musk has said SpaceXAI will be renamed SpaceXSI, adopting the “Super Intelligence” terminology recently introduced across the US executive branch. The proposed change is modest in form, but it comes as SpaceX integrates artificial intelligence more deeply into a business that already spans launch services, satellite connectivity and communications infrastructure.

Musk confirmed the intended name change on October 4 in a response on X after a user suggested replacing AI with SI. He did not set out a timetable for the switch or announce a separate corporate restructuring alongside it, making the development primarily a branding and terminology decision at this stage.

The context is unusually direct. On September 29, President Donald Trump signed an executive order instructing executive departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official correspondence, websites, reports, policy documents and other non-statutory material. For now, the order defines SI using the existing statutory definition of artificial intelligence, so the new terminology does not itself establish a different technical category of system.

For SpaceX, the branding change lands during a much larger strategic shift. The company acquired xAI effective February 2, bringing Musk’s AI operation into the same corporate group as SpaceX’s rocket and connectivity businesses. SpaceX described the combination as a vertically integrated organisation spanning AI, rockets, space-based internet and direct-to-mobile communications.

SpaceX has also made AI infrastructure part of its long-term corporate story. In announcing the xAI acquisition, the company argued that advanced AI will require levels of power and cooling that terrestrial data centres will struggle to supply at sufficient scale and presented space-based computing as part of its proposed answer. Its website now describes SpaceX as developing orbital AI compute.

That makes SpaceXSI more than an isolated naming exercise, even if the immediate change remains cosmetic. It places the AI operation more visibly inside a corporate strategy in which computing infrastructure, satellite networks and launch capability are intended to reinforce one another.

The episode also illustrates how strongly chief executives can influence the language around emerging technologies. A new label can help a company distinguish its strategy, signal ambition and shape expectations among employees, investors and customers before the underlying category has settled into a widely accepted definition. The risk is that the language can imply more than the product or technology currently delivers.

That distinction matters particularly here because “super intelligence” already has meanings in technology debate that can suggest systems exceeding human capabilities, while the White House order currently uses SI as a replacement term for AI rather than as proof that such a threshold has been reached. SpaceX will therefore need the substance of its AI strategy to carry more weight than the terminology around it.

Musk’s proposed SpaceXSI rebrand arrives as SpaceX is attempting to combine AI with physical infrastructure on an unusually large scale. Whether the name endures matters less than whether the integration behind it produces commercial and operational advantages. For senior leaders watching the AI market, the broader lesson is that category creation can strengthen strategic positioning, but only when branding, technical capability and execution remain aligned.
