Amazon plans to invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027 as the technology giant expands its cloud computing, artificial intelligence, logistics, satellite internet and media operations across Europe’s largest economy.

The investment represents another major commitment to Germany as Amazon races to expand its European cloud infrastructure amid growing demand for AI services and increasing competition between technology companies.

Amazon announced the plans at the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin.

Around €4.8 billion will be invested in expanding the Amazon Web Services cloud region in Frankfurt and associated AI infrastructure.

The wider investment programme will also include new logistics projects expected to create more than 3,000 jobs, development of the Amazon Leo satellite broadband network and new Prime Video productions.

Amazon also plans to open a second robotics and AI research laboratory in Berlin.

The scale and breadth of the investment underline Germany’s growing importance to Amazon’s European strategy.

Amazon says it has invested more than €100 billion in the country since 2010 across its operations, infrastructure and workforce.

The latest commitment follows a €10 billion investment announced by Amazon in June 2024 to expand its German cloud infrastructure and logistics network. That programme included €8.8 billion for AWS data centres.

The new investment therefore represents another substantial allocation of capital to Germany as Amazon expands several parts of its business simultaneously.

Cloud computing and AI infrastructure form a major part of the programme.

Demand for the computing power required to develop and operate AI systems has triggered heavy investment by major technology companies, making data-centre capacity an increasingly important part of their growth strategies.

Amazon’s €4.8 billion commitment to its Frankfurt AWS region reflects that demand while increasing the company’s computing capacity in one of Europe’s biggest economies.

The investment also comes as Germany attempts to attract more capital into emerging technologies and strengthen its position in artificial intelligence.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz told investors in Berlin that Germany was investing heavily in AI, semiconductors and other strategic industries to improve productivity and technological competitiveness.

Germany aims to quadruple its AI computing capacity by 2030 as part of that effort.

For Amazon, however, the German investment extends well beyond cloud computing.

The company is developing its Amazon Leo satellite broadband network while continuing to invest in its logistics infrastructure.

The planned second robotics and AI research laboratory in Berlin will further expand Amazon’s technology research presence in the country.

Media is another part of the programme, with Amazon planning additional Prime Video productions in Germany.

Together, the projects demonstrate the increasingly diversified nature of Amazon’s operations in the country.

Germany is a major market for Amazon’s retail and logistics businesses, but the company’s investment programme now also spans cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, robotics, satellite connectivity and entertainment.

That diversification is significant from a corporate strategy perspective.

Rather than directing €16 billion towards a single growth area, Amazon is investing across businesses that range from physical logistics infrastructure to some of its most technology-intensive operations.

It also gives the company a broader platform for growth in Europe as competition for AI infrastructure and technology investment intensifies.

For Germany, the announcement provides a significant boost to its effort to attract private investment into emerging technologies.

For Amazon, the €16 billion-plus commitment reinforces Germany’s position as one of its most important European markets and shows the scale of capital the company is prepared to deploy as cloud computing and AI become increasingly central to its growth strategy.
