En Otra Galaxia
Maverick recorded the cover “to enjoy myself on a Sunday morning”
Ed Maverick is making the saddest song on Peso Pluma‘s Génesis even sadder. On Thursday, the Mexican indie singer-songwriter released a cover of “Lagunas,” Peso’s track with Jasiel Nuñez about forcing himself to stay away from someone he loves so that he can heal.
“Perhaps in another galaxy things were different,” sings Maverick in his distinct melancholic voice. “Perhaps there we’d have what we always had wanted.”
“Lagunas” was the second-to-last track on Génesis and hears Peso and Nuñez introspecting following the conclusion of a relationship backed by soft guitars and requinto. The track is one of the most popular songs on Peso’s debut LP, which Rolling Stone named one of the 100 Best Albums of 2023, and which featured standouts such as “Las Morras,” “Rubicón,” and “Lady Gaga” featuring Gabito Ballesteros.
Maverick told Rolling Stone he recorded the cover “to distract myself, to play around, to give thanks, to enjoy myself on a Sunday morning.”
His rendition comes more than three years after Peso released a corrido-style cover of Maverick’s own tearjerker “Fuentes de Ortiz.” The beloved 2018 ballad has been covered by several música Mexican stars including Julión Álvarez y su Norteña Banda, Yahritza y Su Esencia, and Ballesteros.
The “Lagunas” cover marks Maverick’s first release since 2022’s Eduardo Demos project, which featured a demo version of the 12 songs featured on his 2021 album, Eduardo. The LP featured songs such as “Niño” with Muelas de Gallo, “Mantra II,” and “Ensenada.”
As for Peso, the corridos star has had a phenomenal 2023. Most recently, he was joined by Anitta on “Bellakeo,” was featured on Milo J’s “Una Bala,” and dropped solo single “Peligro” in November.
