Rock and roll has a favorite myth about its guitar players. They are supposed to be creatures of pure instinct, brilliant with six strings and hopeless with everything else, content to leave the business to people in offices. Ray Ray Star has never fit that picture. He is a guitarist who can hold a stage anywhere in the world, and he is also one of the sharper industry minds working in independent music today.
The resume makes the case. Ray Ray is a record producer and an executive producer. He served as Director of Marketing and Promotions for the NBC-aired Real Music Live, a television showcase for live performance. That is not a title handed to someone who only knows how to play. It belongs to someone who understands how music finds an audience, which is the one lesson most musicians never get the chance to learn.

A marketing mind changes the way an artist thinks about a song. Writing a great one is half the job. The other half is carrying it to the people who need to hear it, and that takes planning, timing and a clear sense of who is listening. Ray Ray has done that work on behalf of others, from the inside, with a network’s airtime on the line. When he turns the same skills on his own music, he is not guessing.
The producer’s chair taught him something different. He has produced other artists and worked with a long list of bands and labels, and a producer learns quickly that the song comes first and the ego comes last. He has also toured extensively, both with his own material and as a player in other people’s bands across more than one genre. A guitarist who has spent years serving someone else’s vision develops an ear for what a track actually needs, as opposed to what would be fun to play on it.

You can see all of it in how his own career is being built. The singles have arrived in a steady line: “Feelin’,” “One Step Away,” “Suitcase and a Dream,” “Ashes Next Door” and “Slow Motion Fall,” featuring Matt Pascale, released through Nova Anthem Records. That kind of consistency does not happen by accident. Each release keeps the name in front of listeners and gives the next one somewhere to land. It is the work of someone who knows that momentum is made, not found.
The strategy has paid off in the way that matters most. “Ashes Next Door” earned Ray Ray a nomination for Song of the Year – Rock Artist at the 12th Annual Josie Music Awards, held September 20 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. The Josies are the largest independent music awards show in the world, and this year’s nominees were chosen from more than 100,000 submissions. An independent artist has no major label machine to push a song through a field that size. The artist has to be the machine.

He has applied the same thinking to what he gives back. Ray Ray is a recognized supporter of MusiCares, the organization that provides health, recovery and emergency assistance to people working in music, and a portion of every purchase from his store goes to the cause. It is a business decision made in the service of his own community, and it says as much about his priorities as any song.
The modern independent musician is expected to be a label, a marketer, a producer and a performer all at once. Most struggle with at least one of those roles. Ray Ray Star has held every one of them professionally. The guitar is what gets him noticed. The mind behind it is what will keep him there.
